It's April.
You know... utakuwa serious, utaanza gym properly, kusoma more, ama tu kuacha doom-scrolling na ufanye kitu real.
And so on.
Last month, I barely published. Life ilikua loud, so nilichukua social media break kiasi (which honestly was the best thing), na ile goal ya kuandika twice a week quietly slipped away. I'm not judging anyone, especially not myself.
Normally, every time tukiruka mwaka kila mtu hukuwa na zile new year resolutions.
In January, most of us probably tulikuwa locked in, but now it's April... najua energy sio the same. Ama?
By the time tunafika mid-February fuel tank iko empty. And right now, still tunajipea nguvu na “new month, new me”
vibe. But, have you ever wondered mbona tunarudia that same cycle?
And believe it or not, hii haina anything to do with laziness.
The All-Too-Familiar Cycle
At first, una-set goal. Unafeel unstoppable, na for the first two weeks uko on fire. Then life ina-happen. Deadline ya job, late-night scrolling, missed workout moja tu, and suddenly kila kitu ina-feel pointless.
Research inaonyesha that most people
wana-abandon their New Year’s resolutions by mid-January. Same pattern hu-repeat kwa monthly goals, side hustles, fitness plans, or any other schedules.
The Psychology Behind the Fade-Out
1️⃣. Dopamine inatuchezea dirty
Brains zetu zimekuwa designed kupenda novelty (new experiences). Ukifanya kitu for the first time, brain system yako inajaa dopamine — a brain chemical yenye hufanya tukuwe lighted up. So the first week, everything feels amazing.
2️⃣. Planning fallacy + Optimism bias
Wengi wetu tunadhani vitu ni rahisi kuliko venye ziko, especially without trying.
Tuna-underestimate struggles (burnout, distractions, emergencies, discomfort), alafu tuna-overestimate discipline.
Hii ndio inaitangwa planning fallacy.
Na optimism bias ni ile belief ya “this time will be different". Ukichanganya hizo mbili, unakuwa drawn away from reality na pia burnout. Na ni mbaya !!
3️⃣. Motivation is usually unreliable
And most of us don't know how to build systems that work when motivation is gone.
4️⃣. Hyperbolic discounting
Again, akili zetu zimekuwa conditioned kupenda immediate rewards rather than delayed ones.
Lakini kufanya kitu meaningful kama working out, yenye ni boring na inakupea reward later on, it's just wack 😂
So we end up choosing the EASY over BETTER!! Every single time.
So, Tuna-stay Consistent aje?
Good news, hauhitaji huge willpower,
ni systems kidogo kidogo tu:
👉🏽 The obvious one, shrink goals zako mpaka ziwe stupidly small — Badala ya kuweka energy mingi kwa one huge project, break it down into small doable bits. With that, hakuna burnout.
Tuna-waste a lot of time fantasizing about the end goal, instead tukuwe tuki-work the process. It's the only thing we can control, outcome inajicontrol yenyewe.
👉🏽 The “never miss twice” rule — Life itaku-interrupt, of course. Ni normal. Ukimiss once si big deal, lakini ukianza kurudia more often, inaku-drag away from the goal mdogo.
👉🏽 Lastly, track progress yako na pia celebrate your wins. Hata zile kidogo!
Inasaidia ikifika ni reflecting, unaona at least efforts zako zinalipa.
It's Never Too Late To Restart
Every single day is a new beginning.
April iko tu sawa kuanza afresh kama January. I mean, you're still here, reading this...definately capable of change.
Si lazima kila kitu iwe perfect.
So tell me, ushawahi anza kitu na energy alafu ika-fade midway? Ilikua nini exactly? Ilikufanya ufeel aje?
